Every computer I've ever had has died the same way - just wouldn't turn on =
one day. It might be worth getting it checked, just in case it's something =
simple, but for me the motherboard has needed replacing each time, and it w=
asn't worth it because they were too old anyway.=0D
=0D
I went out last night and bought a new 2 TB USB drive and backed up my own =
system after probably 6 months (the old one wasn't big enough any more). I'=
ll get another tonight so I can alternate them. Thanks for the reminder.=0D

One thing that I don't think has been mentioned yet in this discussion is v=
erfication of backups. Once upon a time, tapes and CD were so unreliable th=
at it was unthinkable not to verify after writing, but with hard disk backu=
ps we tend to believe that if we copy a file then it's ok.=0D
=0D
Does anyone here verify their backups? I tend to limit verification to chec=
king if the backup takes up about the right amount of space, but I should p=
robably check a bit more thoroughly.=0D
=0D
Those of you with RAID sets, how do you know for sure that it's really work=
ing as a set? And how will you know when one drive has died?=0D

Good news folks, as suspected by many here, I have not lost anything. The n=
ew laptop arrived today and after setting it up I have transferred the main=
folders of sounds.=0D
=0D
So will continue with that tomorrow. I am however at a loss as to what caus=
ed this to suddenly stop booting. Anyway disaster has gladly been averted.=
