Unfortunately, it isn't quiet enough. I guess I could do some more formal
comparisons, but it's been all too obvious from yesterday's field
recordings that after the necessary amplification (at least +10dB), (1) the
noise profile looks mostly like white noise instead of the natural/normal
profile strongly biased to lower frequencies (pink-ish noise). and (2) the
signal-to-noise ratio is much lower than what I'm used to with the Sony.
After some subsequent "noise reduction" in Audition using white noise
profiles, some of the recordings have eventually turned out ok-ish. However
I don't like to do that too much and the decrease in quality from the Sony
is still dramatic -- my idea was to, if anything, upgrade, not downgrade...
Thanks for the responses so far. My next move after getting some more info
will indeed be to try and return this one, and probably get a Marantz
PMD661 instead. Will post again if interesting things happen.
