Hi Sabyasachi,
Yes, a wonderful film, but I'm afraid I'm in complete agreement with Roger on
this; in my opinion it's completely spoiled by the music over. Why is it that
music is put over the top of almost everything today, it's as though people are
scared of silence.
On the advice of a friend, I recently had my sat dish re-aligned with a German
satellit. The main reason for this was because it transmits a large variety of
wildlife programs. Here in the UK, it seems there is an obsession with Africa
and it's wildlife, something that has never interested me much, and
particularly as I find it so depressing realising how endangered the whole
continent's wildlife is. However, I was overjoyed to find a vastly different
outlook in regards wildlife programs from this satellite. Not only is there a
more 'at home' approach i.e. Europe and it's neighbours, but there's also
interest in other places such as the Pantanel and Asia. BUT, the most important
thing of all, was what I noticed almost immediately, and that was quiet
commentary with very little music over. Wonderful things, like the sound of a
bear munching on a salmon, and background birdsong. The only time music is used
is when, for instance, doing a fly over of a forest. I'm not aware of how much
this music epidemic is rife in other countries such as the States, but here in
the UK it's reached epidemic proportions. The sound recordists, for a lot of
these programs, must be absolutely mad with frustration a lot of the time,
because a lot of their wonderful recording, with no doubt the very best
equipment, is to all intents and purposes binned. We have here a couple of
excellent presenters, such as David Attenborough and Chris Packam. There
enthusiasm and expertise are faultless, but their programs are chock-a-block
with music over, and as a consequence are sub-standard, in my opinion.
Sorry I've gone on a bit, but it's a subject that tends to frustrate me more
than a bit.
Cheers
Max
