I did the same thing, bought one of these dishes on eBay and used a few dollars 
worth of PVC pipe and a wood handle to mount a single EM172 capsule. It works 
great. My only issue with it is handling noise. I mounted the mic capsule in 
foam inside a PVC tube, but still, every movement of the hand is transmitted to 
the mic. For an additional $80 I could add a Rode PG2 pistol grip, but dollars 
have been dear of late. That would bring the total cost to $160 or so.

I use mine on a tripod when possible. For moving birds I am slowly learning a 
sort of parabolic mic tai-chi.
