Where possible, I personally prefer to have parabol + recorder, without 
any extra boxes to juggle.

I had wondered if, eventually, the preamp function might be built into the 
parabol handle, such that the output from the handle is line level, with 
no extra box...

But no doubt there are other practical issues with this.
