David, I agree with most of your post, but and at the risk of being content=
ious, I have to challenge this:

To my understanding, 16 or 24 bit pulse code modulation (PCM), the standard=
 formats for professional audio, do none of the things that data compressio=
n schemes do. Please explain what you meant.
