I did a blind listening test at an NSS Workshop, and 256K bits/sec was indi=
stinguishable from the original on a dawn chorus. Pushing lower rates depen=
ds on the material and that requires trial and error. There's an expensive =
plug-in available now, Sonnox/Fraunhofer Pro Codec, that lets you monitor i=
n real time switching between original and various codecs and data rates. W=
ould be great for setting up a web site with audio, you could encode differ=
ent clips at different rates depending on how they sounded or looked on a s=
pectrogram.
