This may be of interest to someone here (especially if you know Matlab).
See the last paragraph.

    Sounds About Right
    <http://livingwithinsects.wordpress.com/2012/07/11/sounds-about-right/>

by jjneal <http://livingwithinsects.wordpress.com/author/jjneallwi/>

Flying insects make sound when the wings beat, creating vibrations in
the air (vibration of air is "sound"). New recording devices make it
possible to capture insect sounds within and beyond the range of human
hearing. Sounds can be captured in digitized format and subject to
computer biometric analysis. This technology can be used to distinguish
among human speakers (Speaker Recognition
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speaker_recognition> & Speaker
Verification). Why not distinguish among insect species using sound?

Within a species, there is variation in size and behavior. This
variation can lead to variation in the sound produced. Males and females
are often dimorphic (different in form) and that can lead to differences
in sound produced. Thus, insect identification based on sound must
consider the range, and not just the average metric. Choosing a metric,
or series of metrics that is unique to a species is difficult. With over
800,000 species of insects, some are bound to share the same range in a
characteristic such as pitch. Combinations of metrics may be important
to identification. Analysis of sound requires that the information be
collected and stored digitally. Digitization involves summarizing analog
information, so there is some loss of information. It is important to
choose a digitization process that preserves the information relevant to
species identification.

Eamonn Keogh, an entomologist at U California, Riverside has developed a
device to capture sound from flying insects.
<http://ucrtoday.ucr.edu/7656> His lab has written computer programs to
analyze the sound metrics. However, the computer program is only about
80 percent accurate. Keogh has released his program to invite
programmers around the world to improve the process. The goal is to
achieve 100 percent accuracy. To encourage programmers, Keogh is
offering a $500 prize.
