it's actually been interesting doing some 'inside the industry' research on=
this - speaking to microphone makers etc. My conclusion is that the figure=
s given represent only one very small part of the story & mics are never te=
sted for anything like the uses we all put them to. In terms of personal ex=
perience, recording empty building with very quiet ambience for example, th=
e self noise figures of mics didn't serve any purpose at all.
