You may be right, Jez. I just don't know of any, and neither did the
late Ken Norris (the head of environmental studies at UC Santa Cruz,
and the man who discovered the mechanisms through which dolphins do
echolocation, and one of the fellows who worked with the US Navy
developing submarine hydrophone technologies during WWII). Norris sent
me, as part of his research team, on that first mission in 1984 to
Mono Lake to record w/ the hydrophone we had made. Likewise, he also
sent me to Africa to check out whether or not hippos vocalize
underwater in the late 80s. They do. And I think a colleague from
Harvard and I were the first on record to record those, too. (The
claims are only based on a quick, cursory search of the available
literature at the time and are not meant to be expressed w/ certitude.)
