Hi Patrick,

Very nice recordings you have from Estonia.

My suggestion for the mystery bird will be Greater White-fronted Goose
(Anser albifrons) and besides Black grouse in the background you can also
hear Common Chaffinch, Winter Wren, Green Sandpiper, Great Tit, Chiffchaff,
Common Crane, Common Blackbird, Mew Gull, Song Thrush, Eurasian Curlew.
European Golden Plover, Eurasian Siskin and Goldcrest.

/Ulf

hi all,

some recordings and a query for you - here are a few recordings from an
estonian spring dawn (and just after) for your ears. two from the edge
of a small bog lake:

http://aporee.org/maps/work/?loc=3D13379

and one from a bit deeper in the nearby woods:

http://aporee.org/maps/work/?loc=3D13379

in the background of all 3 you can hear a midrange drone - live, and a
bit in these recordings, it sounds rather like the sound of wind blowing
through wires/cables, but it was actually some local wildlife. at first
we thought it was frogs, as it is the local singing season, but
actually, as can be heard more in the 2nd recording, the individual call
seems too long and more birdlike. any ideas what it is? it seemed to be
coming from across the narrow lake from us, perhaps from the small hill
that can be seen as a darker clump of trees across from and between the
2 lakeside recording points. a few locals have guessed that they are
'teder', black grouse, which tend to gather and play, apparently, in the
open boglands...

i am certainly no wildlife expert. so any more informed guesses would be
more than welcome.

best,
patrick
