Since I have been using this effect as part of an artistic practice, I have=
 not looked at this with any rigour. But I would say the LCD panel is the l=
oudest part of any device I have used (recorder, phone, etc.). Waking it up=
 from sleep is the best way to get a "musical" sound going.

I would also be aware that any device on a network (mobile, for example) is=
 going to emit a constant tick as it synchronises with "home base". I alway=
s keep mobiles clear of any recordings I am doing.
