it is not all that dangerous. tin the wire. touch wire to solder pad. apply
iron (with a little freshly melted lead on it) and keep it there till the lead
on the solder pad melts. it will feel like a long time, but it is only a few
seconds. more components are damaged by repeated timid attempts, believe me.

>Subject: [Nature Recordists] Resoldering a capsule lead
>
>I've just fitted and wired up 3 of my 4 EM172 capsules. The black lead fell
>off the 4th capsule.
>
>I've heard it's very easy to damage a capsule when soldering leads on. Is
>there a good technique for doing it?
>
>I've only got a 25W soldering iron, not temperature controlled. Do I have a
>chance with it, or should I get something better (as I've been meaning to do
>for 40 years)?
>
>I was thinking I would get a molten blob of solder on the end of the wire,
>then hold it on the capsule terminal without ever touching the capsule with
>the iron.
>
>It's only a $10 capsule, but to get another means a two week wait.
