Greetings Nature Sound Recordists Group!

I am a beginning recordist looking to get set up with a recorder and am
looking for advice about the best economic purchase.

I am hoping to buy a sound recorder to start recording bird sounds now that
I have a little bit of extra money. I am also excited about a current
project of doing nocturnal bird audio surveys of migrating passerines in th=
e
last bit of this fall. I have about $400 max I can spend on gear and have
been looking at the Zoom H4n, the Sony PCMD50, and the Fostex FR-2LE. I am
just going to buy a recorder for now and borrow microphones for the time
being. The Zoom H4n recorder was recommended to me, but I looked at reviews
on nature sound recording websites and they spoke of it being very noisy fo=
r
field recording. Unfortunately it is quite a bit cheaper than the others. I=
t
looks like some people on this forum use this recorder with success. I am
going to spend the winter in the field on an ornithology project and it
would be really nice to be able to come away with some good recordings! Any
recommendations?

Many Thanks!
Dan
