Per B=E6kgaard recently measured the noise floors of the Roland R-05 at var= ious gain settings: http://www.b4net.dk/?page_id=3D111 Certainly the diagram at http://www.b4net.dk/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/EIN= vsGain3.png nicely shows that the lowest noise floor can only be obtained a= t the maximum gain setting. I believe that this is a general rule that appl= ies to (almost) all field recorders. It can also be seen that there are indeed still acceptable noise levels at = lower gain settings. In the field, one should therefore select the minimum = gain setting at which the microphone noise just masks the preamp noise floo= r. Unfortunately, this optimal setting would heavily depend on the specific= microphone model. Regards, Raimund |
