Hi,
I'm new to the list (first posting). I have been hiking for years in nort=
hern Italy and southern Switzerland (Ticino) during summer using a Garmin G=
PSMAP 60CSx. I tend to hike mostly at altitudes below the treeline, in the=
forest, including deep valleys, and I've never had a problem picking up sa=
tellites.
One of the problems in that area is the cost/availability of Swiss or Itali=
an maps for the GPS unit. GPS topo maps from Swisstopo are quite expensive=
and the Garmin map products for this area are minimally useful (and expens=
ive).
I use my GPS in Switzerland/Italy without GPS maps and usually carry a prin=
ted map. The GPS is mostly for a) keeping track of distance traveled, b) f=
inding places I have been before and c) for safety, in case I need to backt=
rack.
If anyone knows of good, affordable GPS map products for Switzerland that w=
ould be very interesting.
John
