I came to Messiaen through his organ works, but the discovery of his use of birdsong was a revelation. It suffuses all his work not just 'Oiseaux Exotiques' which is an obvious starting point. My favourite work is 'Turangalila' but I have to feel fit to listen to it and its embedded birdsong. I describe it as like being hit over the head repeatedly with major chords. It's like being in a tropical jungle. David David Brinicombe North Devon, UK Cogito cogito ergo cogito sum - Ambrose Bierce |
