You know, it's a computer, and they get awfully confused sometimes. Usually a 
"cold boot" solves everything, but I suspect an anomalous state had been saved 
in a flash settings memory, so it booted back up with the error intact. You 
found a way to reset the processor that cleared it. Kudos for having the 
patience to experiment for so long.

If it happens again and it's not happening to anyone else, it may be a bad 
memory spot and I'd suggest invoking a warranty replacement.
