For routine recording, off-loading Hi-MD files is
additional work, but in terms of sheer mic pre
noise performance, the "lowly" NH-900 (-124dBu
A-weighted; max gain) is nearly as quet as the
D-50 (-126dBu A-weighted; max gain) see
http://tinyurl.com/2bqxh2w.
The H4n does have a balanced (xlr/trs) mic input
option (along with 3.5mm) but it does not seem
to perform nearly as well noise-wise, (-107 dBu,
A weighted; source: http://tinyurl.com/2vpknz3 ).

One can easily justify sticking with Hi-MD on a
tight budget. In the meanwhile, here's a
time-tested list of precautions for Hi-MD that
are useful to keep in mind:

Wow. 189:399 EUR compared to 229:249 USD here in the U.S.

I haven't tested the newest II model. Its
probably okay. Maybe buy it from a dealer who
will take it back if a test proves otherwise?
Some PIP circuits are finicky with certain
phantom power supplies. If you want to do a
through test, you should be able to hear NO
difference between recordings of a quiet room
using:
(A) NT1-A's -> Art Phantom "II" new version ->
Very Low Input Noise Recorder with Phantom Power
(Turned OFF); Max Gain.
(B) NT1-A's -> Very Low Input Noise Recorder with
Phantom Power (Turned ON); Max Gain.
