Hi Andrew,

Based on a recommendation last year by group member Kevin Colver my field
headphones are the Sony MDR-W08L, which you should be able to pick up for
under $10. The headband is slim enough you can easily wear a hat/mosquito
net/headtorch band over it without any discomfort, but it stops them from
falling out your ears as ipod-style ones tend to do. They give adequate
quality and sound isolation for checking your levels and monitoring, withou=
t
totally cutting you off from your surroundings - a good thing if you're
working in an area where there could potentially be dangerous animals or
(much more likely for me here in the UK!) passing vehicles. They weigh
almost nothing, and the cord is impressively resistant to tangling.

For listening at home I have a pair of Sennheiser HD280 Pros (around $99)
which I'm very happy with - a little light on the low frequencies perhaps
but this isn't usually a major issue for nature recording.

All the best,

Tom
