Here's Leonard Lombardo's study of the LS-10 connected by line input to his=
 high quality external preamp.
http://www.sonicstudios.com/ls10revw.htm

In this case, the measured noise level of the LS-10 line input was higher t=
han the mic input noise reported of the two track Fostex FR2LE ($600) or si=
x track Tascam DR-680 ($830). This performance might be expected from a re=
corder that costs less than half of the price of the larger models.

A second advantage of the XLR recorders over the MixPre and LS-10 combinati=
on is the elimination of the 3.5mm cable connection between preamp and reco=
rder. This smaller cable connector has a history of being fragile, and can=
introduce unwanted noise (usually a crackling noise when the cable is move=
d) into the recording.
