That's a great eclipse movie, and interesting to see the sun in that
manner. You're bird is likely a Turkey Vulture but the Zone-tailed
Hawk mimics the vulture in flight to fool prey on the ground. (The
prey animals do not fear the vulture.) Those broad wings could also
belong to a Golden Eagle and perhaps other species. You might want to
post the question to the ABA chat group where the "birders by sight"
love these kinds of challenges. I'm guessing the TV.
I've only heard wing flap sounds from flying Turkey Vultures, no
vocalizations. As mentioned, without the syrinx they can only hiss
and maybe growl. Rarely, I've recorded the hiss of an irritated
bird. I believe that if you have a captive bird or invade a nest they
make more aggressive hisses and growls although I've never experienced
this myself. I do have a few recorded hisses at a carcass and at a
roost at night but they are rare. I just recorded 40 Turkey Vultures
on roost all night at Mesa Verde and only heard the hiss half a dozen
times as they jostled for their night roost positions.
