Hiss can come from anywhere in your system. Your microphone, you preamplifi=
er, the algorithm used to sample the audio waves and convert them to digita=
l bits, radio interference surrounding your cables, the quality of your cab=
le connections. All participate. And yes, local conditions such as humidity=
 effect some microphones and physical connections. Hiss filter is a kind of=
 notch filter that attenuates a narrow band of frequencies that often contr=
ibute to hiss. Better components help. Using a multiband parametric equaliz=
er helps, using noise reduction software helps. Using star-quad cables may =
help.
