183s are always a good investment. Wide, flat frequency response, fairly high
output level, reasonable noise level. I've recorded a full orchestra with them,
and a good thunderstorm, so I can tell you they have no problem with loud
sounds. The distortion report could have been caused by too-low PIP voltage or
mic preamp overload. They can do everything except for quiet ambiences.
For higher-priced binaurals, I'd wait for Telinga's clip-ons to be available.
