hi, to rob, steve and vicki.
wow - you gave so much.thank you for carefully answering my questions. plea=
se forgive gaps in text (not wrapping) & follow-up questions. I spent hrs.=
trying to comprehend this new language. haven't actually
tried plug-ins with FCEx because I don't know the program well enough yet.
Preface: I hoped to get the tape project done simply (quick and dirty). in =
other words, get that project going on the side while learning Final Cut an=
d how to record new sounds with new equipment (I'm saying this to let you k=
now I'm nu to "everything av"). Was overwhelmed with too many learning curv=
es, so I'm being intentional about what to learn.
each tape is recorded in real time onto the computer. I don't want to put a=
lot of time into processing them. my main interest is doing/refining art w=
ork - loops of video with sound, short mix and match video and sound clips.=
with that in mind:
Do the sound editing programs you suggested also record from from an extern=
al device through the line-in? Or do I need to continue using AudioHijack o=
r try Audacity? (FCEx doesn't record does it?)
Would it be easier and faster to use a fancy de-noiser than filters for the=
tape noise (it's bad)? After watching the RX iZotope video tutorials I tho=
ught that having visual feedback would make this process less subjective (s=
teep learning curve with multiple subjective decisions which
filters require) For example, I unsuccessfully used filters with Audio Hija=
ck (see attached plug-ins for AH). Unsuccessful =3D can't
make out a spoken phrase.
Fancy de-noiser =3D one that has a spectrogram and takes a print of steady =
state noise and uses algorithms to train the program to recognize and elimi=
nate noise. Soundtrack
Pro, Soundsoap Pro and RX iZotope are all fancy. Apparently RX is the best,=
yet all are hard.
Sound editing programs (these programs including DSP Quatro X aren't listed=
on lynda.com for training purposes), but I can get training
for FCEx thru Apple and lynda.com:
BiasPeakLE($99) soundseasyforsoundediting,butIthinkIneedmoretracks. and hig=
her resolution (24/96)
For art Iwanttomixa variety ofsoundstogetherandasculpturalway (larger stage=
with lots of space separating sounds).
I don't know what I'm talking about (these track differences might not matt=
er).
Cubase Essential 4 & 5 ($150) have plenty of tracks and handle high resolut=
ion (it's hard for me to evaluate these
programs because they are for musicians (will call for differences betw 4 &=
5).
Even tho it's expensive for a plug in RXiZotopedenoiser ($280) looks great =
(watched their video tutorials). It can work as a
stand alone (maybe also a VST plug-in for Cubase).
Rob, how isCubasemorerobust than Soundtrack Pro?anddoesvideoplaybackcapabil=
ity mean I can import video into Cubase
orCubaseintoFCExpress?
The ideaofusingFCplug-incapabilityisbrilliant!
I'm not sure that the RX would plug into FCExpress. Here are the plug-ins w=
hich come with it:

However (!), I'm having problems with using filters with Audio HijackPro wh=
ich would apply to material while it's
being recorded.see filters below (sorry about link; they wouldn't attach):

Hi Lilly--
I'm guessing you'll probably enjoy being able to edit/mix multiple
tracks for the video soundtracks and you'll need reference video
playback for synchronization for this too. You'll also need the
ability to insert the aforementioned processing plugs into one or
more tracks for the phone interview and other material too.
It looks like FCP Express has "Mac OS X Audio Units plug-in support"
http://www.apple. com/finalcutexpr ess/specs. html so you should be
able to use third party plugs like ApEq, noise reduction and other
plugs. FCP Express a very workable application for sound editing
unless you need to make a whole bunch of sub-frame edits (shorter
than 1/30 of second in duration). Rather jumping up to Logic Audio
Pro for this, you can take this material to a stereo editor like Peak
LE or Amadeus Pro and then import the edit back into FCP Express for
layering/effects/ mixing. I'd try some audio editing in FCP Express
ASAP to get an idea of its capabilities. Here are some tutorials
http://www.apple. com/finalcutexpr ess/tutorials/
Take some time to learn the short-cut keys designed to streamline
audio editing. I believe you can customize the window layout to
accommodate audio editing priorities. If you sense that the video
overhead of FCP Express is too much for audio-only editing, you might
try a demo of Cubase. Its a little more robust than Soundtrack Pro
and supports reference video playback too. Around $150USD I believe.
As Vicki says, the audio plug-ins are likely to be a significant part
of your investment. All "Audio Unit" or "AU" plug-ins you should be
accessible in any Mac-based sound or video editing application,
including Peak, Cubase, etc.
As for which noise reduction plug to buy, you can install demo
versions of all of them and test settings with your interview
material. It should be pretty easy to decide for yourself. There are
some free AU noise reduction plugs too. The most popular audio plug
type I've seen people invest in is multi-band parametric equalization
and I agree with Vicki that you can't go wrong with APeq.
http://www.apulsoft.ch/apeq/ There's discussion of this plug in our
archive.
Here are some other useful (I believe, free and donationware) AU
plugs you should be able to add to FCP Express and test out 3rd Party
plug support:
