An unknown sound

Subject: An unknown sound

During a night hike in a place in Santa Clara county (hills above
Stevens Creek Reservoir) where we've recently heard Western Screech Owl
(barking and trilling), Great Horned Owl, and seen a Common Poorwill, we
heard this sound. Unfortunately, I only got one vocalization, if that's
what it is, but it was repeated several times, within several separate
"sentences". See the first file here (LS100400PR):

Any ideas?
