There was recently a story on the Australian Science show Catalyst
http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/2628048.htm
An australian scientist (then working at Rice University, Texas)has the onl=
y copies (172 magnetic tapes) of lunar research from Apollo relating to cha=
rged particles. NASA want the data, but there is no longer any equipment (I=
BM 729) capable of reading the tapes. A search has turned one up in Sydney =
and they are trying to get that one working.

My point here is that, although the technical side of the recording is impo=
rtant, so too is the future proofing of the storage media and playback opti=
ons.
