Rob & Klas
Thank You for your answers and all advices. I supposed, that this Yukon
can be cheap-made mike with high self-noise and poor quality. I have
some knowledge about electronics, microphones and audio equimpent but
I'm still an amateur. So Your answers are very important and educational
for me.
Rob,
as I remember, my friend's recorder has an 3,5mm mic input or/and 3,5mm
line-in. Anyway, I think that's not a problem make some DIY adapter if
it's necssesary ;)
Klas,
Your experiments with low-cost microphones are very interesting. Of
course, maybe Yukon DSAS have any good-quality capsules but in my
opinion it's price doesn't confirm that. Note, that's not only
microphone - this "system" also includes pre-amp (maybe with some good
filters?).
Also I found interesting link with scheme of this device
(
http://www.nightvisionplanet.com/Yukon_DSAS_Directional_Sound_Amplificati=
on_p/yukon-27022.htm
). See the point 3 in "Use and Testing" part. What is the "Directional
Antennae" and where is the microphone capsule? Strange thing for me...
Regards
Krystian Z.
Hi Krystian!
I have no personal experience of this mike.
However, two - three years ago several different low-cost (about a
dollar / each) "super-directional-pristine quality-state of the
Art-better than ever" mikes were released by a number of Chinese
factories and they were all about the same.
Apart from phase problems, the self noise is high and unpleasantly
scratchy.
For example, I just tried out the five most impressive mikes from
Transsound, also the one inch double membrane mike.
It was wasting time. The electrets have a awful self noise and the
one inch capsule (Neumann-copy) has a membrane which sticks to the
electrode when polarizing voltage goes over 20v.
The same thing happened when I tried out Chinese low cost capsules
last year. They look very good, good precision, but something is
wrong with the way they polarize the membranes.
And I suspect such capsules are present in most low-cost mikes
nowadays, probably also in Yukon mikes.
If your friend really wants to try a "shot-gun" I would advice him
(her?) to go for a ME-62 or a Röde.
So far, in the low-cost region, Röde has proved to perform better
quality than the others that I know of.
Also note that directional mikes do not amplify sounds. They only
attenuate sounds from the sides.
Klas.
