replying to everyone at once here:

jason - thanks for the thoughts, very interesting.  it hadn't occurred
to me that the oil might be recommended as a protective rather than
necessary element.  it *did* occur to me that it might just be a
weighting question, but i got around that one by adding an external
weight, and it seems to work just fine.

mike - *fantastic* info, thanks for the link!  the difference between
the piezo recording and the electret recording is pretty extreme -
something to think about.  i shall be having a more detailed browse
soon.  as far as buying one from aquarian, that's certainly not an
impossibility, but for the moment i'm having fun...  : )

robb - thanks for your technical insight, as always.  i pretty much
transferred the advice you gave me a while back for my contact mics over
to these xlr hydrophones, and it's working a treat.

and hector - if there's anyone here to comment on aquarian hydrophones,
i guess it would be robb!  ; )
