Hi Rob,

The Grey Francolins were not the best recording to demonstrate what
this technique can achieve, because there was not a great overlap
between their calls and the aircraft noise. But I couldn't find
another example quickly. Also I'm working on the Gugarat Francolin
recordings currently for an upcoming album release, so it was on the
desktop, so to speak.

Producing recordings for a general listening audience as we do, man-
made sonic distractions are just a no-no. And of course recording in
Asia, they are so sadly prevalent. One's sense of frustration is
added to greatly by the sheer difficulty of recording successfully in
Asia - national park curfews, beaurocracy, language and cultural mis-
communications, not having independent transport, the possibility of
dangerous fauna, long treks, or just the soporific climate...

After all this effort, to get wonderful recordings ruined by vehicle
noise, can been just heartbreaking. So developing restoration
techniques to recover some of these rich recordings has been
important for me.

I can't help dreaming of the day that the internal combustion engine
dies out, and humanity's adolescent obsession with noisy toys matures
into more mature and environmentally benign technologies.

Often I think I'm documenting disappearing natural soundscapes. But
maybe in the future we'll find we were actually documenting an
ephemeral period of man-made noisescapes! Maybe I should keep all
those vehicle noises IN :-)

Cheers,

Andrew
