After being on this group, I am glad to say that I have become much
more aware of the bird sounds around my home, and really appreciate
them more. Also, my with a little persuasion, I am hoping to encourage
my father to joint the ranks of nature recordists - a long time lover
of bird-song.
Now, for those of you bored of technical questions, my sincere apologies:
After exhaustive reading through the archives here and on the
internet, and the advice of many of you, I feel near my decision for
recording gear. My aim is to use the AT-3032 mics. I want to be able
to take advantage of their low noise floor. But I would also like
something which is easy to put in my bag on less damanding occasions.
For that, the SONY PCM-D50 is about the size limit. I have been
tempted by the Marantz PMD661, but dissuaded by it's low battery life,
as reported by Oryoki. So I am considering these two possibilities:
XLR-1 > SONY PCM-D50 (total $870, about 0.89kg)
Sound Devices mixpre > Olympus LS-10 (total $950, about 1.04kg)
They both should give me the option of using the recorder alone, or
with XLR capability.
For this though I am unclear on 2 points:
1) How does the line input sound quality compare between the SONY and
Olympus? (Enough to notice with the AT-3032?)
2)Comparing the MIXPRE and SONY PCM-D50 preamps:
I am not sure how to understand the noise rating for the micpre, which
says on their website "Equivalent Input Noise:
-126 dBu (-128 dBV) maximum (150 ohm source, flat weighting, 22 - 22
kHz bandwidth, gain control set at 50% or higher, phantom power off)".
Can we compare this figure directly with the figures on the Avisoft chart?
http://www.avisoft.com/recordertests.htm
On the chart, the SONY PCM-D50 is A-weighted -126dBu and unweighted
-124dBu. I'm not sure which to compare it to. Either way it seems not
much different, although I thought the Mixpre should be much better
than the D50's mic preamps. Does anyone have the experience to compare
the two?
Many thanks
Justin
