Hi Gerald,

You might be interested that Richard Mudhar address questions similar
to those you pose:
http://www.wildlife-sound.org/equipment/recorders/zoomh2/index.html
He observes that the H2's mic pre adds considerable noise when used
with a mic with 16 dB(A) self-noise.

Taking Richard's mic input noise measurement for the H2 of EIN =3D
-95dBu (unweighted) and Sound Professionals spec of -117 dBU
(unweighted), the SP-PREAMP-11 _should_ be able to produce some
audible improvement with your EMKS-23 mics. On the other hand, I
believe that Klas' mic pre cannot out-perform the noise performance
of connecting EMKS-23's directly to a Hi-MD recorder ( EIN =3D -122dBu,
unweighted). I suspect that the noise performance provided by the SP
pre might be compromised in terms of what you are used to with the
mics connected to your Hi-MD. EIN numbers don't tell one about the
color of the noise and, as we heard in Vicky's LS-10 tests, noise
that spreads lower into the frequency spectrum is more noticeable.

The SP-PREAMP-11 only has 43 dB of gain but one might be able to
make-up for this by increasing the H2's line input gain. One might
be able to expand the SP-PREAMP-11's mic compatibility with the
addition of an Art Phantom II but that needs testing to confirm. Rob
D.
