John,
If you are going with a bigger machine be sure to look at the Tascam HD-P2.
You can get a tweaked unit from the Oade Brothers.

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Field recorder choices... Sony PCM-D50/Fostex
FR-2LE/Edirol R-44? (longish post)
I really am looking for a good suggestion here... It just takes a
while to get there!
After doing my research I purchased the Sony PCM-D50 in order to
pursue the dream of recording the world around me, in particular- the
birds that move through & reside in southern Idaho. I also add a Rolls
Stereo Mixer in order to overcome the problem of the lack of mono
recording on the PCM-D50... I've had the PCM-D50 for a couple of weeks
& have used it with the internal microphones (impressive indoors, not
so much outdoors).
After doing more research I found that the ideal pair of mic's for
this setup might be the Audio-Technica AT-3032's I went in search of
them... Of course, they are discontinued, and every place I contacted
(throughout the USA) had just sold the last pair sometime last week!
Okay- I decide to forget about the AT-3032's and buy a Sennheiser
ME66/K6/blimp/softie combination (that I am absolutely enthralled
with, by the way!). I'm happy with the sound, but the combination of
the PCM-D50 & a Rolls Stereo Mixer leaves me with wires & connectors
hanging all over my body. Also- if I barely move the 1/8" connector
from the Rolls to the PCM-D50 I get some rather nasty popping or
crackling sounds!
HERE'S THE QUESTION: Would it make sense to sell the
PCM-D50/Rolls/DXA-10 configuration & buy either the Fostex FR-2LE or
the Edirol R-44 (especially because of the XLR inputs)? If so- have
any of you had experience with both the Fostex & Edirol machines?
I swear this will be my last purchase-related question!!!
I also swear that in the future I will make my posts shorter & only
relate them to where I can find a quiet locale to collect the sounds I
so desire.
No, really!
