John,

Welcome to the forum!

The K6 module for your ME66 mic accepts an AA battery. This will
allow you to connect the mic directly to the Sony PCM-D50, no
additional battery box needed.

You'll need a cable that has a female XLR connector for the mic, and a
1/8-inch miniplug for the recorder. One example of such a cable is the
five foot long Hosa XVM305F. This cable is available for about $10
from online suppliers like B&H Photo Video and Sweetwater.

Give this $10 solution a try before deciding to sell your recorder.
The mic performance is not quite as good when powered by the AA
battery, compared to being powered by an external battery box or a
recorder that can provide 48V phantom power. My guess is that you
won't notice the difference.

If you do decide to purchase a larger recorder to power your mic, the
Fostex FR-2LE is a great machine. It costs quite a bit less than the
Edirol R-44, and the FR-2LE has a better preamp.
