Gordon's recordings set very high standards. Part of it may be his
gear (more below) but more so, he works very hard at mic positioning.
I wish he'd teach some workshops on these techniques. I listened to
"Dawn Chorus," a couple of times last night with headphones. Tracks
4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 16, 17, 18, & 20 in particular seem to have
extraordinary stereo imaging. The localization performance of his
stereo rig is beyond accurate, its often striking. I don't know
whether recordings made in the same spots using other mics/arrays
would be an improvement or not, but his KU-81 rig sounds fantastic to
me.
