XY is a term of art that refers to a particular type of microphones
(cardioids) placed with the capsules directly above one another (coincident=
miking),
and aimed so that each mike is 45 degrees off the presumed center of the st=
ereo
image, for a total angle of 90 degrees from mike to mike. Think of the X =
and
Y coordinates of a graph, one horizontal, one vertical, that's a 90 degree=
difference.
If you want to put your mikes at a different angle, that's cool, but don't=
call it XY, give it another name. As we have seen with the discussions of D=
ecca
Tree and MS and ORTF, altering the basic geometries of a tested and tried (=
and
named) mike technique can muddy the waters for people trying to understand=
them. Manufacturers of late have been calling a lot of things XY which aren=
't
(think Sony D50 and D1), which doesn't help either.
