I missed somehow the original post for this, Martyn, but wanted to say the differences are indeed startling. My biggest example of this comes from a location near to my house. It was a large field which was part cypress swamp and part cow field. Now it's a high school. They did leave the cypress trees, but needless today have most likely driven away all the wildlife.
