Rob,
I'm often doubling up on mics when miles away from
the car - since on any given day, I'm also shooting
digital images or recording HD video.
I often use a Rode Stereo Video Mic which has 9volt battery
and mini connection.
I just picked up an Aquarian H2A hydrophone as well,
mini version which is PIP.
I sometimes use a Rode NTG-2 (phantom or AA battery) with
a transformer into mini video input or minidisk mini,
but this should be fine with FR2 as it's XLR native.
And I just got in line for EM23 PIP stereo pair from Klas.
My quest for lo noise single point stereo of the XLR
variety continues. Until then, I use the SVM, which is
in the high teens for self noise.

agreed, so, if used to convert mini mic input
to plug and play with 1/4 trs jack, would static
from poor connection be the only issue, other
than the power issue addressed above?
