Hello
Apologies for the cross-posting.
For those of you in the US, I hope you have had a good holiday weekend.
I have a few posts that I would like to share from recording sessions
in May and June.
The first post is recordings from a trip to a group of ponds near
Clanton, Alabama. The choruses of frogs and toads in the area are lush
and geographically extensive. This location is the first place I heard
the bird-voiced tree frog (my favorite). For the moment, I have posted
only 2 edits (more to come).

Second is a recording of Bullfrogs taken from an outing to the Great
Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey. Thanks kgtkeys2003 for
the suggestion and rsl54442 for the tour.

And last but not least, is a recording of an American toad chorus
taken in the Connecticut Hill Wildlife Management Area near Ithaca New
York. American toads are absolutely hypnotic when singing in groups.

My favorite part about this list has always been the postings of
recordings by list members, both of nature and of gear tests. While
Yahoo! Groups provides image and file uploads, I find that its not
particularly well suited for our purposes. So while editing and
posting these recordings, I wrote a bit of software to assist in the
process that I hope others on the list(s) will find useful. It can be
found at:
http://naturerecordists.com
In writing this site, I have tried to target features that we need
like playback, annotations, biophony lists (tagging), and image
association. I hope that this site will enable those recordists
without web-publishing skills to share their recordings more easily
and to create posts that supplement discussions on this listserv.
The site is free to use, I only ask that you restrict your uploads to
recordings of a primarily nonhuman origin that you have made (gear
tests are fine too!). You will need to have a Flash player installed
to listen to the recordings (chances are that you have this already).
I have intentionally left out many features such as maps, geo-tagging,
collaborative posting, and RSS feeds because I wanted to make sure
that the core of the application simple, useful and working properly
for those with dial-up connections. There is commenting available on
posts, but this feature is primarily intended for non-list viewers and
I would prefer that discussion about posts remain on the list.
The sound format of the site is MP3. This is not the format that many
of us typically use for our masters, but it is the format that is most
often used when sharing our work on the web - either on this list, or
for purchase from places like iTunes. If anyone needs help regarding
MP3 encoding for use on naturerecordists.com, please do not hesitate
to contact me off-list.
I am interested in all of your comments, suggestions, and especially
bug reports. This release is essentially an open beta, so I assume
that you will find a bug or two, or at the very least something
annoying. Please let me know.
Enjoy,
David
