i think there is a general conclusion to be drawn with all these small low=
=A0cost flash recorders. none of them have analog gain controls! all the co=
ntrol comes after a-d so=A0neither noise or overload margin benefit from lo=
wering levels, this is true of zoom h2 as well (probably also h4) it makes =
sense to record wide open (as we used to say in analog) and reduce the gain=
(if needed) by padding down the mic or some gain control ahead=A0of the re=
corder. get=A0closer if you want more signal, move=A0away if you are overlo=
ading.

ps even where there was analog control, i found setting levels (except to a=
void overload) no longer a critical issue with 24 bit convertors. in three =
years of regular use of digidesign m-box, i dont think i set the levels any=
where but at midway.

higher recording level produces less noise on the LS-10?!
