Paul: I think you can place the mic in the parabola by ear. (I use a Sennheiser mic in a "universal" parabola, but the same principle applies in other setting, I believe) What I did was set a sound source outside (small radio tuned between stations) and, from a fair bit away, pointed the dish at the radio. Plugged into a recorder and monitoring the output through headphones, I slid the mic in and out a bit at a time until I got the best sound. A used a bit of tape on the mic to mark where it should be in the Telinga foam holder and this has seemed to be reliable enough to put it in the dish without monitoring and get decent recordings.
