Rally, "better" is subjective! You are right to try it out. Hope you
have good monitoring so you can mix in the amount of center that
pleases you. It would be great to record all three tracks and play
with the mix in post, but not everyone has a 744 recorder.
I've done plenty of ORTF (basically that is similar to what you are
doing with the two side mics, right?) recording, and ir works fine,
and adding a center channel can be good for what you want.
Here's a caution: experiement with how far the center mic sticks out
forward - the phase relationship to the two side mics will make a big
diference in your stereo field. Move it firward and back until you
hear it "click in" and combine with the side mics nicely. Then use it
that way! If you ignore the relationship of the side and the front
you will get varying results. Since you are mixing to 2 track you
will be stuck with it on the recording.
