Hi Walt--
I agree that commercial software is getting way too expensive, and
also inconvenient. It is critical for me to be able re-open editing
docs and access plug settings that I created several years ago. The
rush to offer new operation systems, hardware ports/accessories and
other "bells & whistles" with marginal improvement too often places
fundamental needs and previous investments in jeopardy. Audacity, has
promise, but its not there yet in terms of plug performance and even
file type compatibility. Does anyone on this list know anyone who is
writing code for Audacity? It seems like there would be _some_
overlap,.. Maybe there is and some us could consider supporting their
efforts.

Inexpensive is always a priority for students. For $40, Amadeus Pro
is worth looking into. Its not quite as full-featured as Peak but it
is very solid for track editing/plug processing and great file format
compatibility. Nature Recordists will appreciate the real-time
frequency analysis tools and the most recent version even supports
multiple track editing. I demo'd DSP Quattro and Amadeus II at the
same time and afterwards found that I couldn't justify $300 for Peak
anymore. For me, Amadeus' interface and work-flow is a better fit.

My apologies to anyone who might be offended by the subject-line
editing. Suzanne's question prompted many different questions &
remarks. Rob D.
