my experience with budget airlines is that even if I do get to the
counter early I still get hassled on occasion (EasyJet is the worst)
for my suitcase being over 20kg
I'm often given CD and books while on the road so this tends to add
to the weight of my luggage

it sounds like you only travel with a carry-on piece of luggage that
holds your rig...?

my modus operandi is to get high quality audio as stealth as I can get
my rig is a Sound Professional preamp in an Otter box (all tucks into
the KATA bag) recording to a hard drive based Archos 402
mics are Reactive Sounds Auris stereo lavs - which use Panasonic caps
[reactivesounds.com website seems to be down -- are they still in
business?]
so far I'm pleased with my rig and the quality of material I'm have
been getting
I can whip out my stereo lav mics and be recording in a moments notice
I like having close to zero set up time and the ability to record
without being noticed
