Zoom H2 with external battery?

Are noise issues with the H2  usefully improved by a 9V battery? Using a number 
of these 
compact inexpensive (if very lightly built) units for short term passive 
multisite sampling of 
bird or mammal vocalizations came up in conversation. It would be easy to equip 
them with 
a larger battery pack and only a little more work to replace microphones if 
something else 
with fairly low cost would be better.
