Is there any reason for preferring  CBR to VBR?  VBR is supposed to  
"usually produce higher quality mp3s" than ABR/CBR according to  
comments on hydrogenaudio.

For those who using LAME - which is one of the better mp3 encoders -

  Thanks for the heads up re encoding from higher than 16bit/44.1khz  
masters.  There is an interesting thread at KVR on 16bit/24bit -> mp3  
conversion with some user generated testing:
