I guess the intent of the external battery low voltage warning is if  
you are running an external pack only. I suppose you could set the  
low battery warning to a reasonable point and unplug the external  
when the voltage drops to 12.5-13V.  Based on a 9V switch over, I'd  
guess that an 8 cell NiCAD/NiMH pack is the maxium you could use and  
still have the switch over to the internal work correctly.  FWIW the  
external Li-Ion pack I'm using to power my HDP2 drops to about 8V  
when flat, and puts out between 10-12V for the most charge life, so  
something like that could be an alternative.
