AT3032 and instability in Sound Devices MixPre and 302, 442, MM-1, M

Hi
I was trying out a pair of AT3032's into a SD MixPre when the MixPre started to
well
'motorboat'!
The sound output was totally unusable and quite alarming! Spending some time
investigating
this problem I found that if you ran with 48V phantom power and the 80Hz bass
cut switched
in on the MixPre it would function normally. Or you could run with 15V phantom
power and
no 80Hz filter. The oscillation is dependent on headphone volume as well, so
something to
do with the power supply then, I though?
I contacted Sound Devices who got back to me saying this is a known problem
with the
MixPre and the 302, 442 etc. They even have a web page explaining it all at:

http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/mixers/oscillation-xfmr-inputs/

Thankfully it looks like you can run the AT3032's on 15V phantom OK. Phew!

Once over the initial problems I am quite impressed with the AT3032's and they
make a very
good addition to my kit of parts.

Phil
