Your observations are correct. There has been 2.6dB drop in max gain
in a recent firmware update but not a 22dB loss in gain.
The figures published by Sound Devices have always been correct, but
the 70dB reported on list misses the all important "input dBu to -20
dBFS", which results in gain being overstated by 20dB when compared
with recorders measured at 0dBFS.
In the end this has absolutely no impact on the usability of the SD 7
series: they probably one of the best recorders out there for what we
do, and having finally seen one in the flesh I was very impressed by
how compact they are.
What I've tried to do is level the playing field when comparing
recorder gain.
cheers
Paul
