Hi Gianni--
The mic's self-noise remains the same but 10dB less gain (less
sensitivity) can introduce more mic pre gain in quiet locations on
lower cost recorders. I believe the NT-4 has 12mv/Pa sensitivity
without the pad so it provides less sensitivity than many other mics
nature recordists frequently use.
Note that the attenuation "pad" is only found in the unbalanced 3.5mm
stereo cable and not in the split xlr/balanced cable. You might not
find the pad in your 3.5mm cable; Rode removed it later on in
production. I'd definitely by-pass or completely remove the pad. The
gain increase is significant. Rode has! Rob D.
